Step 1: Addressing the Joint Component

For a dog already on an NSAID (meloxicam), the supplement priority shifts from anti-inflammatory (the NSAID is handling that) to cartilage protection and structural support. This changes the selection criteria significantly.

Primary joint supplement: Cosequin DS Plus MSM (2 tablets/day for Cooper's 72 lbs). Glucosamine HCl 500mg + Chondroitin 400mg + MSM 250mg per tablet. Cost: ~$45/month. This is the foundational layer — the most evidence-backed combination for cartilage maintenance.

Omega-3 addition: Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet (1 tsp daily = approximately 650mg EPA + 450mg DHA). Cooper was already eating a kibble with minimal omega-3 content. Adding fish oil directly addresses joint inflammation at the membrane level, complementing rather than duplicating the NSAID. Cost: ~$20/month.

We intentionally did not add UC-II on top of glucosamine/chondroitin — the evidence suggests they work through distinct mechanisms and may be combined, but given the NSAID already on board, we prioritized avoiding unnecessary supplement complexity.

Step 2: Addressing the Anxiety Component

Supplement-based approaches to anxiety work best for mild-to-moderate separation anxiety — they are not a substitute for behavior modification training (which Cooper was also receiving) but can reduce the physiological arousal that makes training harder.

Primary calming supplement: Zesty Paws Calming Bites with L-Theanine, organic chamomile, valerian root, and passionflower. L-Theanine — the most evidence-backed ingredient in this category — promotes alpha-wave brain activity associated with calm alertness. Dose: 2 chews/day for Cooper. Cost: ~$0.70/day (~$21/month).

We chose not to add melatonin (sometimes used for situational anxiety) to the daily protocol since it's more appropriate as a situational supplement (thunderstorms, car travel) rather than daily maintenance dosing.

The 90-Day Results in Detail

We used a standardized veterinary mobility scoring tool (Helsinki Chronic Pain Index) monthly and owner-reported behavioral logs for anxiety tracking. Key outcomes at 90 days:

Joint: Helsinki Pain Index improved from 32 (moderate pain) to 22 (mild pain). Force plate gait analysis showed 31% improvement in weight-bearing symmetry. Cooper's owner reported he was spontaneously engaging in activities he'd avoided for 6+ months (jumping into the car, going up stairs without hesitation).

Anxiety: Destructive incidents dropped from a mean of 5.2/week to 1.1/week. Owner noted the change was more gradual than with the joint supplements — noticeable improvement around week 6, significant improvement by week 10. The concurrent behavioral training was undoubtedly a contributing factor and cannot be fully separated from the supplement effect.

Total monthly cost: Cosequin ($45) + Nordic Naturals ($20) + Zesty Paws Calming ($21) = $86/month — slightly over our $80 target, but acceptable to the owner given the documented outcomes.
